The Safaniya oilfield is the largest offshore oilfield in the world. Located offshore northern Saudi Arabia, the field stretches into the neutral zone shared between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In the neutral zone, the field is called Khafji.
Discovered in 1951 and starting production in 1957, the field is believed to contain 37 Billion bbls of oil. To put this in context, the entire UK has produced 26 Billion bbls to date!
Producing from Wara sandstone - a different play to the Ghawar field, Safaniya (sometimes spelled Safaniyah) has excellent reservoir properties. Oil is 27 API Arabian Heavy Crude.
